Dean's Lecture Series 2027

Background

The Dean's Lecture Series is one of our signature public engagement strategies that supports three of the five Advancing Melbourne pillars: Place, Education and Global.

Purpose and criteria

The intention of the Dean's Lecture Series is to create unrivaled and enriching experiences for our students, underpinning our ambition to be one of the leading schools for our disciplines in the world; it also underpins our ambition to be a dynamic, distinctive destination for our alumni, professional, government and general public audiences, demonstrating our influence across all our activities, as informed advocates leading public conversations, shaping policy development and transforming practice.

Through the Dean's Lecture Series, the Faculty expands our network, connecting our community with leaders in built environment innovation. These relationships remain fruitful over time beyond the events.

The series features high profile international guest speakers - leaders in our disciplines. Speakers from interstate who can travel to Melbourne will also be considered.

We aspire to equitable representation of our disciplines each year across the four events; and we are committed to diverse and inclusive programming.

We engage our international speakers for activities across a three/four-day period. Staff can apply through this expression of interest process to act as a host for their nominee for a range of activities:

  • Keynote public lecture on a Tuesday evening
  • Appearance/s in Masters-level and/or Bachelor of Design classes
  • 1-2 hour workshop for ABP staff
  • Japanese Room Conversation - small gathering for staff and high performing students selected by teaching staff
  • Meetings or conversations with groups of students
  • Engagement with subjects and studios
  • Guest critic at reviews
  • Research discussions, opportunities
  • Other engagements, as appropriate

The Dean's Lecture Series could also offer the opportunity to partner with external organisations (industry, accrediting bodies and professional associations, government) and present public activities in collaboration.

The allocated budget must cover any required travel, accommodation in Melbourne, hospitality (dinners, lunches etc) and activities that make up the engagement.
