The Robert Garland Treseder Fellowship was established in 2016 through a generous donation from the Creative Futures Foundation. the 2026 Fellows will be celebrating a decade of support.
Purpose and Selection Criteria
The fellowship is open to international artists, business innovators, designers, policy leaders, start-ups, architects and scholars with a dedication to the development and promotion of design-based innovation.
The nominated fellow will be primarily based at, and hosted by, the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning and may collaborate with other faculties or divisions of the University with a demonstrated commitment in design and innovation. They may also be invited to collaborate from time-to-time with not-for-profit associations external to the University with a dedication to the development and promotion of design-based innovation particularly in regional settings.
ABP staff can apply through this Expression of Interest to act as a host for their nominee for a range of activities which could include, but are not limited to:
- research collaboration within Faculty or broader University academic community;
- collaboration with not-for-profit associations external to the University;
- delivering a public lecture, seminar or participating as a speaker at a symposium;
- lead workshops;
- collaborate with ABP colleagues in developing a gallery exhibition (NB: use of MSD gallery and exhibitions spaces requires evidence of endorsement from the MSD Exhibitions team and will necessitate a longer lead time);
- engagement with subjects, studios and students;
- guest critic at reviews; and
- other engagements, as appropriate.
It is strongly anticipated that fellows will be in residence for a period for a minimum 10 working days and up to one semester.
Applications focused on design and innovation under any of the following broad themes will be favourably received:
- Indigenous practices
- Climate and biodiversity
- Global impact and internationalisation
- Healthy, just and diverse places
- Future of practice
Benefits
Fellows will receive funding to cover accommodation, travel, and associated expenses with AU$30,000 as a guide.
Conditions
The conditions of each Robert Garland Treseder Fellowship will be specified in the letter of offer, but it is stipulated that each Fellow will:
- hold the Fellowship for a minimum of 10 working days (2 weeks) and up to one semester;
- hold the Fellowship concurrently with an honorary appointment as an Academic Visitor to the University of Melbourne under conditions specified separately;
- use the title of ‘Robert Garland Treseder Fellow’ for the duration of the visiting appointment to the University only;
- receive a contribution toward living expenses;
- receive return economy or premium economy airfares to Melbourne.
