The SGS Graham Larcombe Award is awarded annually to recognise demonstrated interest in equity and social disadvantage issues in urban development.
SGS Economics & Planning Pty Ltd (SGS) is pleased to sponsor this award, named after the late Graham Larcombe. Graham was a friend and constant supporter of the SGS project over many years, as a co-consultant, teacher and honorary adviser.
Graham Larcombe was a champion of the people and appreciated the capacity of communities to take control of their destiny and transform their environment. He participated in their struggles and cherished their triumphs. He loathed corruption and campaigned fearlessly against it in his own community. He lived his beliefs in his everyday life.
Graham was the Principal and Director of Strategic Economics Group. He held post graduate qualifications in economics and planning. He was actively involved in industry policy development in Victoria in the 1990s. During this time he became one of Australia's leading exponents of spatial economics. His insights into the geography of investment and job creation proved very influential at the time and continue to be cited today. Graham became a leading, well respected Australian contributor to international organisations such as the OECD and Asian Development Bank. He assisted Australian governments at all levels to develop economic strategies and plans to achieve the best future for cities, industries and local economies.
Graham led large teams of economic and infrastructure specialists working in Australia and developing countries in Africa and Asia. He had a great love in particular for Vietnam, South Africa and East Timor - countries which he helped in practical terms with economic development, housing and infrastructure plans after they emerged as free nations after long periods of oppression and conflict. He was fiercely proud of their achievements.
Graham was passionate about equality of opportunity, environmental sustainability and the proper, inclusive governance of our cities, towns and regions. For him, these were integral elements of a truly prosperous society.
One award of $7,500 will be offered to a student currently enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.
